Instead of blogging in fits and starts as I did throughout 2008, this year I've resolved to make it regular part of my week, in addition to 100 pushups and sit-ups every morning and the deletion of beer from my diet. To this end, I've resurrected The Lohdown - the title of the column I started at my very first magazine (special prize to the first reader to send in the title of that long forgotten publication). For you NPR listeners, please be assured that I did not rip off the eponymous title from Sandra Tsing Loh's (no relation) one minute science report "The Lohdown on Science." If anything, she ripped it off from me; her show made its debut December 5, 2005, while my column started back in 2001. Back then, my most interesting columns often sprouted from reader correspondence -- usually from correctional institutions. In December, Metro Detroit Nissan/Infiniti dealers offered to do the same. Nissan North America declined, asking Michigan dealers to respect the decision. After weeks of indecision (there are about two dozen cars to choose from) I've decided to drive our long-term 2008 BMW X5 from L.A. to Detroit. It'll be good test of the truck's cross country and winter driving abilities. Plus it has nav, satellite and all that good stuff. All season tires too. Should I make it to Detroit alive, I'll leave the BMW with Dan Pund, our Detroit Editor, and drive our long-term Cadillac CTS back to California. Regulars on this page will remember that Dan drove the Caddy from L.A. to Detroit about a month ago . Hybrid Sales Crater Amidst Lower Gas Prices Jan 6 - 6:16pm
You've probably seen it a hundred times in the last year. Some talking head on TV saying that if automakers only made more fuel efficient cars, the public would buy them. Really? The 2008 sales numbers are in, and the draw of fuel efficiency doesn't seem to be holding up in the face of lower gas prices. Our own Green Car Advisor, John O'Dell, looked through the final sales numbers for hybrids in 2008 and it was clear that their green sheen had definitely worn thin.

We eclipsed the 5,000-mile landmark in our A4 Avant over the weekend. So Monday morning we called our buddies at Santa Monica Audi to schedule an appointment. They accepted the car in the morning, changed the oil and filter, performed their routine inspections and returned it to us later that afternoon. Based on past experience with this dealer, that is fast. Our conversation with the cashier at pick-up was just as quick. "No charge for your first scheduled maintenance appointment, sir. Sign here, please. Have a nice day." Now we haven't forgot about their failure to order Q7 parts in a timely manner. Or the time they forgot to tell us our R8 was ready for pick up. Or that day they left a pair of channel locks in the engine bay. But this is the most pleasant experience we've had at this dealership in the past 3 years. Could it be a sign of things to come? Things are looking up at the Big Three already. Well, at least that's what Automotive News is reporting today. The piece quotes UAW boss Ron Gettelfinger who claims that Chrysler and GM may not need any additional government loans. ""If we can get by without more money, that's what we want to do," he told AN . Mr. Gettelfinger is no stranger to overly optimistic statements, but he wasn't alone. An unnamed source at GM also expressed confidence that the worse might be over. When asked if GM will request more government money, the source said "no." "We've got enough money," the source told AN. Good to know there's some optimism in Detroit these days, but we're guessing that both Ron and GM's Deep Throat might be a little premature with their rosy outlooks. Automotive News

Over that distance, I added a total of 99.8 gallons of unleaded gasoline. A recent NY Times op ed gave plaudits to a Senate investigation held in the 1930?s to discover the causes of the Great Depression. But the power of congressional investigators is vastly overstated and overrated. They can be stymied by resourceful, deep-pocketed corporations. Considering the current attitudes of US automakers, it's unrealistic to expect any voluntary disclosure to Congress, any meaningful disclosure to taxpayers. But, as the Bermie Maddoff liquidation shows, bankruptcy court is another matter entirely. The trustee in the Madoff liquidation/investigation can ask the bankruptcy court to authorize subpoenas, which can be used to compel production of documents and to compel witnesses to testify. The prospect literally scares GM and Chrysler witless.

It was concerning a local Saturn dealership and it was the second one in two days about the same dealer, Tony March Saturn of Hartford. Of the two people who called me, one has an older SC three-door coupe that was out of warranty, while the other has a one-year-old Vue SUV. I gave them both basic advice about looking for another dealer, but that recall and/or emergency work would likely be able to be handled by any General Motors dealership. I even suggested that the owner of the Vue try asking the OnStar people what she should do. Adolf Merckle, a German billionaire, threw himself in front a train after coming to terms with the fact that his business empire was crumbling. Although Mr. Merckle's business interests ranged from cement companies to pharmaceuticals, it was revealed in October that his VEM investment group had lost hundreds of millions of euros betting on the decline of Volkswagen stock. An unprecedented surge in the share price of Volkswagen stock in late October briefly made the German company the world's largest corporation in terms of market capitalization. Just yesterday, Porsche increased its stake in Volkswagen to over 50%. The move was no surprise as Porsche officials said publicly in December that they planned to increase Porsche's stake once Volkswagen shares had returned to normal after their spectacular October run up. The 2009 Bentley Continental GTC Speed might be the least surprising debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show . After rolling out high-performance "Speed" versions of the GT coupe and Flying Spur sedan, the GTC was the only worthwhile model left. Like the Continental coupe and sedan, the GTC Speed gets a 600-horsepower W12 engine along with a few minor suspension tweaks. Bigger wheels and high-performance summer tires are also part of the performance upgrades. The interior gets cool stuff like diamond-quilted seat trim and drilled alloy pedals. And the price? 2008 Cadillac CTS V6 DI: Now with intermittent windows Jan 6 - 10:02am
I am reliably informed that this is an imperfect world. I offer yet more proof of this in the form of the Cadillac CTS' rear-window operation -- or lack thereof. At first I thought it was due to the punishing cold. Sometimes windows stick to the seals until they get warmed up and the electric motors don't have the juice to bust them free. That the rear side windows responded sometimes in the deepest darkest cold night but ignored my request once the cabin was warmed up blew a hole in that theory. Sometimes the windows rise, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they make a clicking sound but no motion and sometimes they do nothing at all. It looks like the fault is in the driver's side door switches, because the windows usually respond to the rear door window switches. With the CTS going home to California next week and since it doesn't make the car dangerous to drive in anyway, we'll probably just wait until we get back to LA to have them looked at. --Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit at 20,760 miles

GM officials confirmed to the Detroit News that it will deliver an all-new armored vehicle to the Secret Service in time for President Elect Obama's inauguration.
